Read-a-Thon Updates – Dewey’s October 2013 RAT

8:15pm – Update #3:

After my second update, I had 2 1/2 hours of lunch and Things That Had to Get Done.  I went back to reading at 5pm, reading until 6:05.  I napped a bit, as I kept falling asleep in my book, then read some more from 7:30-8:00pm.

  • 5:00-5:30pm – The Aspern Papers by Henry James, page 1-25 (very dense and slow-moving compared to my previous read…putting aside for now)
  • 5:30-6:05pm – Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood, page 1-15 (which provided a weird tinge to my nap-dreams)
  • 7:30-8:00pm – Year of the Flood, page 16-50 (really good…not sure yet if as good as the phenomenal Oryx and Crake, but this sequel/prequel is excellent nonetheless)

Time read this update:  1 hours 35 minutes
Pages read this update:  75 pages
Total time read:  4 hours 45 minutes
Total pages read:  254 pages
Total books finished:  1

I feel like I’m reading so slowly, and I just can’t keep it up for long periods of time.   I used to read like a fiend!  Well, such is life, and the goal is quality, not quantity, isn’t it?  🙂

2:30pm – Update #2:

In the 3 hours 30 minutes between 11:00am and 2:30pm, I read a total of 2 hours 25 minutes, with various breaks as needed.

  • 2:30pm – Finished:  How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe, by Charles Yu, page 103-233

Time read this update:  2 hours 25 minutes
Pages read this update:  131 pages
Total time read:  3 hours 10 minutes
Total pages read:  179 pages
Total books finished:  1

———————————————–

I’m taking my first reading break, which seems like a good time to update. I think I’ll just edit this post throughout the day to avoid spamming followers.

10:30am – Update #1:

  • 9:30am – Start Reading.  Book:  How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe, page 55
  • 10:15am – Break.  Bookmark:  HtLSiaSFU, page 102

Time read this update:  45 minutes
Pages read this update:  48 pages
Total time read:  45 minutes
Total pages read:  48 pages
Total books finished:  0

I think I’ll experiment with this tentative schedule for a while, as it seems sensible.  (Read 45 minutes, 15 minutes break to stretch legs, use restroom, get more tea, etc.)  I have an arthritic condition, so I can’t allow myself to sit for too long at a time, or I’ll regret it dearly, so I need to force myself to take regular breaks.

Ok, time to get back to the books!

  1. Definitely quality over quantity! I’ve only read two books so far and I’m pretty happy with that 🙂 I hope you’re having a great read-a-thon and really enjoying the books you’ve picked.

  2. The Aspern Papers! Boy, do I ever remember slogging through that one years ago. You “chose wisely” to put it aside during the Readathon… 🙂

Though i just “discovered” Atwood in the past year, I love her and look forward to reading more of her.
